Effective date or signing date? They're not the same
A contract can start on a different day than the day you sign it. That's normal — as long as it's written into the contract as the effective date, and the date next to your signature is the day you actually signed. Here's how the two dates work together.

Signing date
When you signed. It's a fact — write the real date.
Effective date
When the contract's terms apply. The parties agree on it; it can be earlier or later.
Last signature date
If there's no effective date, many contracts start when the last party signs.

Usually at the top: “effective as of …” or in a term clause.

The date by your signature is the day you sign.

Why contracts have an effective date
Work often starts before the paperwork is finished, or the parties want the contract to begin on the first of the month. Writing “effective as of 1 March” covers that period openly, even if everyone signs on 10 March.
Why you shouldn't backdate your signature
Writing an earlier date next to your signature suggests you signed on a day you didn't. That can mislead others and, in some situations — tax, regulatory or court documents — cause serious legal trouble. If the contract should start earlier, ask for an effective date in the text instead.
Future start dates
The same works the other way: a lease signed in May can start on 1 July. The signature is dated in May; the start date is in the contract.
